The Thought Doesn’t Really Count

The Girlfriend: “I don’t know what to get you for Christmas.”

Me: “How about instead of buying each other presents this year we take whatever money we would have spent and put it toward a nice vacation.”

TG: “That’s a good idea.”

TG: (concerned) “You’re still buying me a present, right?”

I had a similar conversation with my fiance. "No gifts" rapidly escalated into a "50 dollar limit" with a "20 dollar limit" for stocking stuffers.

(hanging my head in shame)

I too am guilty of this. Luckily, The Boy has learned to read and speak "Girl:" "No" means "Yes" and "No presents" means "You better be getting me something REALLY good or else I'll cry and talk about my feelings."

Take it from me. Girls really love it when you get them an Xbox for Christmas with an assortment of Nascar driving games.

i'm in the opposite situation (or the same? or kind of similar?).

despite the fact that we said no presents, boyfriend asked me when i wanted mine (because i'm going out of town without him)...i told him i didn't get him one and wasn't going to.

i'm a horrible girlfriend.

that had me laughing, only because I've been in a similar situation like that .. you know how it is - girls will say one thing, but mean the other!!

So, are you going to get her a present???

Exact same words. Exact same coversation. Last week.

If you want to win her respect, get her nothing. She will understand that you are a man of principles, a man who cannot be pussy whipped, a man who marches by the beat of his own drums.

The downside is that she'll hate you and probably dump you, but at least you have her respect. That, you cannot put a price on.

While you can't really put a price on it, my guess is that it's of slightly less value than good sex, relatively speaking. But that's nothing new - I've been trading self-respect for sex since college.

But it's nice to open pressies!
